Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) and the Chamber of Commerce in Cuba recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) during the Havana Internal Fair (FIHAV) 35 in Havana, Cuba.
It means the two business support organizations will expand and deepen trade relations between the two countries.
Under the agreement, the GCCI and the Chamber of Commerce of the Republic of
Cuba have vowed to exchange information regarding existing business opportunities, expertise, and training as it relates to Guyana’s emerging oil and gas sector, health, retail and the information and communications technology (ICT) sectors, among others.
The MoU will see both organisations promoting and facilitating participation in trade fairs, exhibitions, conferences, and other similar events that are aimed at the expansion of trade.
President of the GCCI, Deodat Indar, signed on behalf of the local chamber, while head of the Cuba entity, Orlando Hernández Guillén, signed on behalf of his chamber.
Guillén noted during the signing that the MoU would open more avenues for business partnerships between the two countries. He added that the MoU provides an official structure for unofficial trade between Cuba and Guyana.
Meanwhile, a MoU was also signed between the GCCI and the Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO). With the signing of the MoU, both organisations have agreed to promote the development of projects and trade in sectors of mutual interest, such as renewable energy, pharmaceutical, tourism, construction, the agro-processing industry, ICT, oil and gas, as well as the film industries.
President of the Federation of Indian Export Organisations, Ganesh Kumar Gupta, expressed willingness to work closely with the GCCI to explore synergies and linkages that would be mutually beneficial to the growth and development of both countries.
This MoU opens the avenue to Guyana benefiting from India’s formidable expertise in the oil and gas industry, having one of the largest oil refineries in the world.
The Indian Minister of Commerce and Industry, Suresh Prabhu, was pleased with this new development. The Indian High Commissioner to Cuba, Tsewang Namgyal, also expressed his appreciation for the signing of the MoU between the Private Sector of India and Guyana.
