The contraband items that were found during the search on Thursday

Over the years, searches at various prisons have unearthed contraband items such as ganja, improvised weapons, and several other gadgets that can be deemed dangerous. Last July, a search at the Lusignan Prison had unearthed 25 improvised weapons, two cellular phones, two cellular phone cases, eight lighters, a quantity of Ziplock bags, and two metal objects in Holding Bay One.
And 14 improvised weapons, five charger heads, seven lighters, three scissors, a quantity of Ziplock bags, one cellphone, one cellphone housing, two cellphone batteries, one cellphone charger, a quantity of wires and two metal objects were found in Holding Bay Two.
In Holding Bays Three and Four, a small quantity of homemade wine, 12 improvised weapons, 14 lighters, two scissors, one cellphone charger, one cellphone cable, a quantity of wires; and one small transparent Ziplock bag of suspected cannabis, amounting to 1/2 gramme, were discovered.
Only recently, the acting Director of Prisons, Nicklon Elliot, had told Guyana Times that efforts are being made to address the issue of collusion between prison officers and inmates.
He was, at the time, asked about instances of collusion between prisoners and law enforcement officers.
“Based on intelligence, yes, this has been happening; that is why we are working to reduce that…that is why these searches are being conducted to retrieve whatever items are within the prisons,” he had explained.
Over the past month, Joint Services ranks have unearthed almost 100 improvised weapons, along with large quantities of ganja, razor blades, cigarettes, metal objects and lighters from prisons across the country.
The Director of Prisons is hoping that these constant raids would deter collusion between prison officers and inmates.
