Project “Cricket Gear for young and promising cricketers in Guyana”: Project boosted with support from Star Sports Trophies and Awards

Star Sports Trophies and Awards, a popular sports store located at 28 Logwood, Enmore, East Coast, Demerara, has donated more cricket gear for the project “Cricket Gear for Young and promising cricketers in Guyana”.

At a simple handing over ceremony held recently, former national senior wicket keeper-batsman Sheikh Mohamed, the owner of Star Sports, presented to the project bats, batting gloves, junior cricket balls, wicket, cricket bags, keeping pads and gloves, cricket shoes and clothing, all to an average value of $600,000. And this follows an earlier donation of gear towards the project.
The sports store is the agent for authentic major cricket brands around the world, and provides the highest quality of gear and other sports equipment.

In presenting the gear to Anil Beharry, a partner in this initiative with Kishan Das of the USA, Sheik said he is impressed with the level of accountability and the reach of this venture, and is happy that young players from all three counties of Guyana are benefiting, thus this additional contribution.
Beharry, a current executive of the Guyana Cricket Board, expressed gratitude for the gear, and committed to help as many young cricketers as possible in Guyana.
Beharry has said is hopeful that a new breed of young players would come through the system, making Guyana and West Indies cricket strong again. He alluded to the fact that sports in general helps to keep our young people off the streets, and is an avenue to a better life.
Total cricket-related items collected so far: $130,000 cash, two trophies, eleven cricket boots, fifteen pairs of batting pads, fifteen bats, nine pairs of batting gloves, eighteen thigh pads, one wicket-keeping pad, one arm guard, and four cricket bags. In addition to the above, there is now $600,000 worth in gear.
To date, thirty-two young players from all three counties of Guyana have already benefited from a junior gear bag, two trophies, nine bats, nine pairs of cricket shoes, six pairs of batting pads and seven pairs of batting gloves. In addition, the Rose Hall Estate Cricket Club has benefited from a pair of stumps and bails, and two clubs in the Pomeroon area have benefited from two used bats.
Pomeroon, Leguan and Wakenaam Cricket Committees have also each received one box of red cricket balls.
Cricket related items, used or new, would be distributed free of cost to young and promising cricketers in Guyana. Skills, discipline and education are important characteristics of the recipients. Talent-spotting is being done across the country, and club leaders are also assisting to identify talent.
