Public health sector gets US$420,000 in equipment from China

Visiting Chinese delegation to Guyana led by Madam Cui Li, Vice Minister of National Health and Family Planning Commission of the People’s Republic of China, on Friday handed over US$420,000 worth of medical equipment and supplies to Minister within the Public Health Ministry, Dr Karen Cummings.

The handing over ceremony took place at Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation’s (GPOC) Resource Centre.

Some of the equipment included laparoscopic instruments, ophthalmic quick sterilising pan, a peritoneum cleaner, one H3-2 image, one HD camera head, an electrosurgical generator and one image 1 HUB HD camera host.

The donation is yet another given with the aim of strengthening the ties between China and Guyana.

Speaking at the ceremony, Vice Minister Cui Li expressed her delight as China’s Minister of Health to assist Guyana’s health sector.

“Currently there are Chinese doctors that are in Guyana working with the Guyanese doctors and I want to show my gratitude for the work that they are doing to assist Guyanese.”

Also addressing those gathered, Ambassador to Guyana, Zhang Limin said that China will continue to support the people of Guyana.

“China and Guyana are really proud of their relations together. China will continue to do the best in its capacity for Guyana’s development and is willing to work with Guyana for the development of many fields.”

Minister Karen Cummings said that the donation is well timed and arrived when it is highly needed by GPHC.

She added that the donation will contribute to the GPHC providing quality care to Guyanese.

She reflected on some of the previous donations from the Republic of China, thanking them for the current donation.

“Guyana and China have a long history of exemplary relations and have cooperated in a number of areas like education, culture and trade. This shared relationship is one of mutual respect, China’s long-term humanitarian and support to Guyana has been flourishing since diplomatic relations between the two countries was established many years ago.”

She added that for many years China has been providing medical personal to assist Guyanese.

After the handing over ceremony, the Vice Minister of the People’s Republic of China, along with the Minister within the Ministry of Public Health, toured the new wing of the multimillion-dollar maternity ward which is expected to be commissioned before yearend.
