QC’s Theater Arts Class presents “Colour of Race” @ NCC on Sunday

ENT_18_APR_15_2016_CHRWLSThe Queen’s College Theatre Arts Class of 2016 as a requirement for their School Based Assessment (SBA) will be hosting a night filled with drama, song and dance at the National Cultural Centre on April 17.

The students, along with the guidance of their teacher, have realised that there is a great sense of division in our society with respect to religion and ethnicity.

As such, the students and the teacher were able to identify a production that will bring awareness of the effects of such acts of social division among the people in Guyana.

This production was written and directed by Sonia Yarde. The one-act play that is great entertainment but it also forces one to analyse an issue that is still very much prevalent among some Guyanese.  The unfolding story is told of an Indian family and a black family that struggle over their children’s love.

The mothers blatantly disagree with their children’s relationship on all levels. Constant nasty and verbal battles are ongoing in this small yard until it becomes physical.

The Indian father is neutral, having been through his share of life. When it is revealed that the girl is pregnant, all hell breaks loose, leading to a forced pregnancy termination, contemplated suicide and eventually a face to face challenge of acceptance or change.

The cast includes Playwright and Director Sonia Yarde, Clemencio Goddette, Oceana Hoppie, Marisa Ann Morgan, Jairam Balram, Sunil Balram,  and Stage Manager ladonna Kissoon. Apart from the play, there will be performances by Calvin Burnett, Mark Luke Edwards, Music Unlimited, Rebecca Gher and others.

The night of drama, dance and songs is set for April 17 at the National Cultural Centre at 17:00h. Tickets for the event cost $1000 and are available from members of the Theatre Arts Class of 2016 and the National Cultural Centre.
