592 Beer Inter-Village Football Festival…
Following the conclusion of a highly-competitive group round, fixtures for quarter-final action in the inaugural 592 Beer Inter-Village Football Festival, programmed to commence on December 15, were officially released on Tuesday.
This was revealed in an official press release from the tournament coordinators. The opening round, which commences at the Buxton Community Ground, will pit Mahaica against Friendship from 20:00h. In the second match, Paradise will tackle Buxton at 22:00h. The action will resume on December 22 at the Golden Grove Ground with another double-header.
The first fixture will pit Brush Dam against Golden Grove at 20:00h. In the second match, Beterverwagting (BV) will oppose Ann’s Grove at 22:00h. The respective winners will progress to the semi-final round.
According to the release, “The tournament, which has attracted large crowds, now enters the business section. It promises to be an exciting affair as the teams aim to secure the coveted title. The group stage has produced thrilling action and many unlikely results which bode well for the fans that are expected to continue their unwavering support. Presently, all systems and protocols are in place for the staging of the matches; the only thing that remains is for the teams to prepare and execute in their effort to secure a berth for the January 1 finale.”
Initially, the 12-team event featured four groups of four. Group A comprised Buxton, Plaisance and Mahaica, while Group B consisted of Friendship, Paradise and Victoria and Group C featured Brush Dam, Melanie and Ann’s Grove.
Group D was made up of Annandale, Golden Grove and BV. The winner of each group alongside the second-place finisher advanced to the quarter-final round. The grand finale is pegged for January 1.
The eventual champion of the event will pocket $300,000 along with the championship trophy. The second-, third- and fourth-place finisher will receive $150,000, $100,000 and $75,000 respectively and the corresponding trophy.
Similarly, individual prizes will also be awarded for the Most Valuable Player (MVP) and the Best Goalkeeper. Some of the major sponsors of the tournament include Bakewell Guyana Incorporated, ExxonMobil, and the Colin Talbot Construction Services.
