The Ministry of Public Health/ Petra Organisation and Busta Soft Shoe Football Championships will enter its quarter-final stage tonight at Parade ground on Middle Street South Cummingsburg Georgetown.
The matches that were originally scheduled for yesterday and will be played tonight beginning at 21:00 Hrs with Sophia matching skills against North East La Penitence. Dark horses, the Kitty Weavers clash with Broad Street at 21:45 Hrs followed by the formidable Tucville
unit who lock horns with Goble Yard at 22:30 Hrs. The final match of the night pits together the ever green Queen’s Street Tiger bag and defending champions Sparta Boss from 23:15 Hrs.
Petra Organization Co-Director Troy Mendonca in speaking to Guyana Times Sport explained that that the tournament has been exciting and believes the fans and players are eagerly anticipating the quarter-final stage.
“From a football standpoint, I think it’s excellent we had some surprises in the round of 16; it’s just unfortunate the weather keeps pushing us back a bit but thin the fans and players are eagerly anticipating the quarter-finals,” Mendonca said.
The tournament which is being played to champion the cause Against Gender Base Violence is expected to have an effect on the
communities that participate in the championship.
In this regard, Mendonca said,” When we got the indication that the Ministry of Health wanted to foster this cause, the players and supporters who come to the match, we could target those people, so over the period of the competition, we were able to deliver the message of stop gender base violence and hopefully we see the impact of this, over the days and months to come”.
Mendonca is urging all fans to come and support their teams in what is expected four exciting matches, stating, “If you don’t be a part of it, you will miss out, but we are confident, support will come and rally around their teams”.
The winner of the event will collect $300,000 and the Championship trophy while the second-placed side will receive $200,000 and the runners-up accolade.
On the other hand, the third-placed side will receive $100,000 and the respective trophy while the fourth-place finishers will pocket $75,000 and the corresponding title.
