Eight senior football clubs are now set to contest the quarterfinal round of the Guyana Football Federation’s (GFF’s) Super 16 Cup year-end tournament after the first round of knockout matches concluded on Sunday evening.

A glimpse of the GFF Super 16 action

Defending champions Den Amstel FC, Santos FC, Guyana Defence Force (GDF) FC and Western Tigers were the final four teams to advance to this round-of-8, which is expected to be played tomorrow.
In Sunday evening action at the Leonora Track and Field Facility on the West Coast of Demerara, Santos FC trampled Eagles FC in a 4-0 encounter.
Despite taking a while to find their rhythm, after scoring the first goal, Santos continued scoring at regular intervals to keep a win out of reach of the Eagles FC. Additionally, the Santos’ defense was spot-on, ensuring their goal-keeper had an easy job.
Lavaughn Eniss first found the back of the net in the 33rd minute; and following the 1-0 score at the half, Eniss returned to score his second in the 57th minute, shortly after play had resumed.
Under-20 talent Marcus Wilson showed his worth with a goal scored in the 61st minute; and as the end of regulation time approached, Kester Jacobs added the fourth for Santos, in the 87th.
The crowd trickled in for the second game of the night, a more scintillating encounter involving defending champions Den Amstel coming up against the challenge of an aggressive Riddim Squad.
Known for their extremely physical style of play, it came as no surprise when Riddim Squad went one up first, thanks to a Kevin Agard goal scored in the 3rd minute.
The crowd of predominantly Den Amstel supporters was not pleased that a goal had been scored so early against their team, but was soon appeased when George Payne levelled the scores in the 14th minute.
The 1-1 score made for some interesting and forceful play, until Den Amstel’s Andre Hector broke the deadlock in the 55th minute, and followed up with a goal in the 67th minute to push the score to 3-1.
The defending champions were not yet done with their opponents; Chris Macey netted their fourth goal in the 85th minute to give Den Amstel a 4-1 win.
As such, Milerock FC, Police FC, Fruta Conquerors FC, Buxton United, Western Tigers, GDF FC, Santos FC and Den Amstel FC will be the eight teams to advance to the next round of competition, which is expected to be played tomorrow, Christmas Day, December 25.
The final of the Super 16 tournament is scheduled for January 1 at the National Stadium.
Among the tournament’s sponsors are MACORP; Pegasus Hotel; Brass, Aluminum and Cast Iron Foundry (BACIF); THAG; Marics and Company; NAMILCO; Impressions; and Hits and Jams.
