Quick fix temporarily restores water pressure in Georgetown

…permanent repairs to be done in 2020

Following the recent break away of the Cemetery Road, Georgetown main water pipe, which saw residents of central Georgetown being left without running water for days and in some instances, extremely low water pressure, Managing Director of the Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) revealed that the company has since prioritised the repairs of the over 100-year-old main for 2020.

The broken 117-year-old 14-inch main has since been temporarily repaired and water has been restored to the affected areas.
However, Managing Director of GWI, Richard Van West-Charles, said on Thursday that the water company has since prioritised the replacement of the said main for 2020.
“The breakage at Cemetery Road has now moved us to prioritise that project for 2020, as you know that transmission line was about 100 years old, so it is a critical priority for us and we are reordering some of the priorities for 2020 to ensure that resources will move to replace those lines as immediately as the budget is approved,” Van West-Charles disclosed.

Additionally, two other mains located at Church and Vlissengen Roads are also scheduled to be replaced in 2020.
“That, along with Church Road and Vlissengen Road, are two of the main transmission lines which we have to replace as soon as possible” the Managing Director said.
Central Georgetown residents, along with residents of Turkeyen, Cummings Lodge area, North Ruimveldt, Festival City, Sophia Plant, Central Plant and Kingston were affected for a number of days.
Many had reached out to Guyana Times to voice their complaints about the water shortage woes and the time it took to be rectified.
Meanwhile, a large section of West Coast Demerara (WCD) residents are also without water; however, the company revealed that works are being conducted for that issue to be rectified.
