The MYO/Trophy Stall Inter-Jamaat Softball Cricket Competition had been affected by late commencement in 2020 because of the prevailing inclement weather prolonging from December 2019.
The tournament was eventually started, but after a short period of contestation, was again put on hold around the period of General and Regional Elections. And now, with onset of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, this competition has been suspended indefinitely.
Senior Vice President of the Muslim Youth Organisation (MYO), its Sports Committee Chairman Imran Ally, has, however, expressed conviction that once the situation has been declared conducive for play to resume, the tournament will be ‘up and running again’.
In a brief chat with Ally, this publication was given an insight into measures the MYO has taken to promote
overall safety. Ally said, “Well, we are encouraging everyone to be safe: ensure that they sanitize always, and take all the necessary precautions that the WHO and PAHO have advised us to take. There is no cricket going on at present, but we are encouraging our athletes to stay fit and still do their routine exercises, so that when play resumes, they are ready to go.”
Ten teams have registered to participate in this inter-jamaat competition, two more than had participated in the last tournament. These teams are: LBI ‘A’ Masjid, LBI ‘B’ Masjid, New Mosque, New Amsterdam Masjid, MYO, Cornelia Ida Masjid, Leonora Masjid, Tuschen Train Station Masjid, Hague Masjid, and Diamond New Scheme Masjid.
The ratings for 2020 are as follows: New Amsterdam is ahead of all competitors, while MYO and Cornelia Ida are tied on second. Tuschen, Hague and LBI ‘B’ are next in line; followed by LBI ‘A’, then Diamond; while New Mosque is in the cellar.
This Inter-Jamaat Softball Competition is sponsored by Trophy Stall, whose owner is the generous businessman Ramesh Sunich.
