Raging winds, heavy rain damage new Anna Regina Stadium roof

…no injuries reported; repair team mobilised

As a brief period of strong winds and rain caused structural damage to properties, both public and private, across the coast on Wednesday afternoon, one sport facility was not spared the wrath of the inclement weather.
The new Anna Regina Stadium on the Essequibo Coast sustained damage to roofing in one stand, which has since been described as ‘minor’ by the Ministry of Culture, Youth, and Sport.

A look at the damage done to the Anna Regina Stadium as a result of strong winds and rain

The Ministry shared in a social media post, “According to preliminary reports, strong gusts associated with the weather system ripped off sections of the roofing material at the facility, which is currently in its final stages of preparation ahead of its scheduled opening next month.
Despite the visible damage, authorities have confirmed that no injuries were reported at the site during or after the incident.
Officials connected to the project indicated that emergency repair teams have already been mobilised and are expected to begin restoration works immediately. Engineers are also assessing the structure to determine whether additional reinforcement is required before the venue is officially commissioned.
The adverse weather conditions affected several communities across the Essequibo Coast, and other parts of Guyana, with reports of fallen branches and temporary power disruptions in some areas.
The Anna Regina stadium is expected to serve as a key sporting hub for the region, and its upcoming inauguration has been highly anticipated as part of efforts to expand sport infrastructure in Region Two.
Meteorological officials are continuing to monitor weather patterns as intermittent rainfall and wind gusts are forecast to persist over the coming days. Residents are being urged to remain alert and take necessary precautions.
Authorities say further updates will be provided as repair work progresses and assessments continue at the stadium.”
The Anna Regina Stadium was set for a July 3, 2026 opening. It has not yet been confirmed whether or not Wednesday’s damage will set back that commissioning date.
