Rahim shines at Junior tournament

A crop of young Guyanese Chess players showed their skill over the past week, while participating in the FIDE Worldwide Youth and Cadet Tournament- Americas Selection. The tournament was played from December 2nd to 5th.

In what turned out to be a sensational performance from wildcard entry Angel Rahim, the teenager shook up the U18 female draw by rattling up 4 points before losing the seventh round with a possible top three finish in her sights. The clock beating her against Ruiz Andorra in her final game. In her sixth-round game she moved past Adani Clarke the Jamaican WCM FIDE, rated 1811. This had her well positioned in seventh place with 4 points from six games.
The phenomenal form of Rahim was the highlight of the Guyanese team and could place her among the best junior girls in the Americas. Some other credible performances from the Guyanese team came from Rahim’s male counterpart in the U18 category, Jaden Taylor with 2 points, the U10s Anaya Lall and Arysh Raghunauth with two points each. There were also wins for U18 Sasha Sharrif and Ethan Lee, U12s Harmony Dodson and Kyle Couchman.
According to the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF), they are pleased to support the Country’s juniors at this event and look forward to escalating their junior program in the near future.
