Rain dampens explosive action

GMR&SC ‘King of the Strip’ Drag Meet
Rain was the ultimate winner when the Guyana Motor Racing & Sports Club (GMR&SC) held its King of the Strip Drag racing meet on Sunday at the South Dakota Circuit.

Mohammed’s Enterprise Nissan GT-Rs took to the startling line but only gave a glimpse of their power due to the wet conditions at the South Dakota Circuit

The event was poised to be a scorcher with several drivers making improvements to their machines but many were unable to showcase their true power due to the slippery nature of quarter-mile strip.

One of the Toyota Caldina came out briefly on the track and easily won its race

Only four categories were completed when the day’s action came to an end prematurely due to an accident.
Vivik Joshi who won the 12 seconds class in a time of 12.106s was on the hunt for more honours but his Toyota Altezza (4WD) skidded and flipped multiple times in the sand until it came to a stop turned on its roof.

Despite the constant downpour, several fans came out in their numbers to witness the event

Joshi escaped partially unscathed with just some cuts to his hands and his vehicle surprisingly still reasonably intact.

The little competitive racing saw Pankraj Ramdeo win the 15 seconds in a time of 15.386s; Ryan Brijpal (14.745s ) topping the 14-seconds and Surinamese Nevin Lalbeharie winning the 13-seconds in 13.474s with his Toyota Mark X.

The rush was on to verify the condition of Vivik Joshi who skid-off the track during a race

The weather seemed to be changing its course and much to the delight of the sizable crowd, Team Mohammed’s Enterprise and their Nissan GT-R reeved their engines at the starting line.

They took off in rapid time and gave the fans a teaser but resisted on pressing the gas due to conditions. The day before in practice they were clocking 7.8 seconds just above their 7.5 seconds record.

Sharima Khan (pink car) looked to be dominating the 11 seconds class until the category prematurely came to an end

Much to the disappointment of many the highly anticipated showdown between Shawn Persuad’s powerful Toyota Caldina and the GT-R did not materialise.
The next order of business for the club will be their Annual General Meeting and election of officer bearers scheduled for Friday. (Akeem Greene)
