Rain ensures Demerara retain title

Yadram named MVP

A washed out third day assured Demerara retained their Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) Hand-In-Hand under-19 Inter-county Three-day title at the Everest Cricket Club on Thursday to add to their 50-over accolade won earlier this month.

The early morning down pours prevented any possible play in their clash against Berbice which looked to be heading to trilling finale.

At the end of day two Demerara were in a spot of bother with the score being 95 for 9 from 48 overs, leading by 119. This was after off-spinner Karan Arjpaul ripped through the innings to produce remarkable figures of 9 for 22.

Over at the Police Sports Club (PSC) ground, rain also washed out the entire day’s play between the National Under-17 select squad and Essequibo. The U-17s were bowled out for 227 on Wednesday with Kevlon Anderson scoring a glorious 101.

Essequibo, in their reply, struggled against the bowling and closed on 100-9. Left -arm spinner Ashmead Nedd snared 4 for 29 from 33 overs while Anderson chipped in with 3 for 5.

Both Arjpaul and Anderson were given the man-of-the match awards for their respective performances.

West Indies under-19 player Bhaskar Yadram was the named the tournament’s most valuable player scoring 204 runs, taking 10 wickets with a best of 4 for 37 and also took two catches while replacing the injured first choice wicketkeeper.

Demerara’s opening batsman Raymond Perez was the highest run-scorer accumulating 259 runs with a best of 125 while Keshram Seyhodan (18 wickets) was the highest wicket taker, having a best of 6 for 67 from 21 overs; Nedd was second with 15 wickets.

Likewise Demerara’s Joshua Persaud and U-17s Robin Williams shared the most dismissals (three) award for wicketkeepers.

Demerara accumulated 25.5 points ahead of Berbice’s 19.7; National u-17s select squad (11.1) and Essequibo in the cellar position with 8.6 points.

The tournament was held in preparation of the Regional u-19 tournament which will be in St. Kitts and Nevis from July 21 to August 28.
