Persistent rain forced the first washout of this year’s Hero Caribbean Premier League 2016 when the Barbados Tridents hosted the Jamaica Tallawahs at the Kensington Oval.
Match 12 was off to a late start after persistent rain caused the players to stay indoors shortly after Kieron Pollard won the toss and
decided to bowl with rain lurking.
The game was reduced to 12 overs per side and the Jamaica Tallawahs started with all guns blazing with Chris Gayle and Chadwick Walton. Walton hit five boundaries in his 25 from 21 balls and was first to go at 47/1 in the sixth over. Kumar Sangakkara then came and got to work immediately. He faced 14 deliveries and after hitting three fours and a six, he was bowled by Ravi Rampaul for 25.
Rovman Powell faced one ball and hit a six just before the heavens opened for the final time forcing the officials to call off the game with the Tallawahs on 116/2 from 10 of their 12 overs. At the other end Gayle was on a mission to maximise and was not out on 47 from 20 balls after hitting five towering sixes and two blistering fours. He was severe on all bowlers, especially David Wiese and Shoaib Malik.
Both teams collected one point each from the no result.
The Tridents next play the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots on Wednesday also at the Kensington Oval and will be hoping for better weather and for a full match while the Jamaica Tallawahs travel to Kingston to begin their home matches on Friday. Their first opponent will be the Guyana Amazon Warriors.
