Ramdhani siblings in Canada: Priyanna cops bronze, Narayan gets CCAA All-Canadian award
Guyanese siblings Narayan and Priyanna Ramdhani took on the Canadian Collegiate Athletics Association (CCAA) National Championships over the weekend, and once again made waves with their performances.
With the competition beginning on March 17 and running into the weekend, Narayan and Priyanna advanced to the semi-finals of their respective categories on the first day of the competition.
After winning four out of five games in the preliminary rounds, Narayan went on to meet Kunal Sokar in the semi-final round. In what was described as “a very tiring and upsetting match where several questionable calls were made which frustrated and demotivated Narayan”, he lost after three tough sets 21-14, 16-21, and 21-12.
He went on to play the third-place play-off, where he suffered another defeat, this time to Yuge Zeng, in a two-set encounter, 21-17, 21-11, resulting in a fourth-place finish in the men’s singles.
Nonetheless, Narayan went on to pick up the CCAA All-Canadian Award.
On the other hand, Priyanna teamed up with Abbey Taylor for the women’s doubles.
The pair got off to a rough start, losing three of their five preliminary games, but still managed to make it to the semi-final round. There, they came up against the top-seeded duo of Victoria Duong and Praanjal Taneja, and lost in two straight sets 21-19, 21-18.
However, for the third- place play-off, Priyanna rebounded well and she and Taylor were locked in a three-set thriller against Salina He and Kathie Liu, which they eventually won 18-21, 21-16, 21-16. Priyanna walked away with a bronze medal for her performance.
With the Canadian badminton season coming to a close, the Ramdhani siblings will shift their attention to the Pan American Badminton (Individual) Championships, where they will represent Guyana from April 28 to May 1, 2022. The event is expected to be hosted in San Salvador, El Salvador, where Narayan and Priyanna will compete individually in the singles events and later team up for the mixed doubles.
