When the COVID-19 pandemic first struck, everything sportwise came to a halt. Gyms were closed, social distancing came into effect and the number of coronavirus cases rose daily.

This dealt a great blow to many of Guyana’s athletes; however, with true resilience, the Guyana Amateur Body Building and Fitness Federation (GABBFF), in collaboration with the Culture, Youth and Sport Ministry, was able to pull off a Resilience Bodybuilding and Fitness Championship at the National Cultural Centre.

Ronaldo Caldeira, Men’s Physique winner

The competition was tough as each individual brought their best as they were competing for prize monies of over $1 million in cash in their respective categories. The participants vied for victory in the categories of Physique, Miss Bikini and two divisions in the bodybuilding segment – lightweight (Under-165lb) and heavyweight (Over-165lb).

Darious Ramsammy, Under-165lb and overall winner

The top three from the bodybuilding competition clashed for the overall title, with the winner guaranteed $200,000. The top three finishers in all the categories prior to the overall were rewarded with purses of $100,000, $70,000 and $50,000, respectively along with hampers, compliments of Fitness Express.
In the lightweight category, coming in third was Marlon Bennett, in second was Ebo Orford and in first position was Darious Ramsammy, a definite crowd favourite.

Rosanna Fung, Miss Bikini

In the Physique category, coming in third was Darren Harris, second was Jonathan Jeffery while Ronaldo Caldeira walked away with first place.
In the Bikini category, third place went to Christina Ramsammy, the second-place finisher was Ashanti Conway, and stealing the show and coming in first was Rosanna Fung.
In the heavyweight category, in third position was Carlos Peterson, in second was Nicholas Albert, and the top position went to Julio Sinclair.
The top three finishers for each category then took to the stage competing for the title of overall champion and $200,000. In the end, it was the one and only Darious Ramsammy who walked away with the coveted title.
According to GABBFF President Keavon Bess, this win secures Ramsammy a spot on the CAC team for Barbados 2021.
