Rape trial ends in hung jury

Leslie Castello, who was indicted at the Sexual Offences Court for raping a child under the age of 16 nearly six years ago, will have to face another trial after his current case ended in a hung jury.
Castello was accused of sexually penetrating the child between November 1 and 30, 2012, in the county of Demerara.
However, on Thursday, after considering the evidence presented throughout the trial, the jury in deliberations could not arrive at a formal verdict as the proportion recorded was 8-4. Justice Jo-Ann Barlow presided over the matter while State Counsel Abigail Gibbs appeared for the prosecution.
