Razor blades among contraband items found during NA Prison raid

A number of prohibited items, including cellular phones, were found on Friday when a search was carried out at the New Amsterdam Prison Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne).
It was reported that the exercise was carried out on Friday, between 06:15h to 08:30h, by ranks from Berbice. They were assisted by ranks from the Guyana Defence Force, Guyana Fire Service, Officer in Charge of the New Amsterdam Prison, and other ranks of Police Regional Division #6.

The contraband items found during the raid

The contraband items found during the joint operation include two Samsung and one ZTE cellular phones; four phone batteries; 60 Ziplock bags with a quantity of cannabis which amounted to 37.9 grams when weighed; one Digicel SIM card; 37 lighters; four phone chargers; 18 razor blades; 10 improvised weapons, and two pairs of scissors.
Around this time last year, a quantity of contraband was found at the New Amsterdam Prison.
Joint Services ranks had carried out the search in the male and female quarters of the prison, and among the items discovered and seized were 15 cellular phones, 12 cigarette lighters, nine improvised weapons, 11 pieces of broken mirrors, a cellular phone battery, 10 cellular phone chargers, two pair of scissors, four metal spoons, $580 in cash and a number of razor blades.
Meanwhile, just a few weeks ago, 826 grams of ganja was found at the Mazaruni Prison, during a search of the facility. The search was conducted along the outer wall of the Mazaruni Prison and on the western side, a black plastic bag containing ten parcels of ganja was found.
The cannabis was reportedly wrapped in plastic wrap. In addition, 1.5 litres of alcohol and a quantity of smoking wrappers were also found. The Police were contacted and the narcotics and other prohibited items were handed over.
