Regal Masters, fresh from winning the 2nd edition of the Prime Minister’s Cup cricket tournament, continue to show why they are a class above the rest, convincingly defeating Fisherman’s Masters in the Over 45 category of the Guyana Softball Cup 8, played at the Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) ground.
Batting first, Regal Masters cruised to a 60-run victory over Fisherman’s Masters, bludgeoning Fisherman’s Masters as they scored 218-7 in their allotted 20 overs.
Throy Kippins laid the foundation for Regal Masters with a quick-fire 47 before his wicket fell; and skipper Mahendra Arjune then blasted 72 off 34 balls as he and Eon Abel (39) added 104 runs for the third wicket.
Bowling for Fisherman’s Masters, L Persaud and P Singh claimed 2-37 and 2-47 respectively. Set a target of 219 for victory, Fishermaen crumbled to 158-5 off their allotted 20 overs, as Regal Masters were just too good for them.
Fishermen made a brisk start, but Regal tightened their grip on them in the middle overs. The only two substantial scores came from Fazal Ali, with 50, and Baldeo Persaud offering 40 as Fazleen Mohamed of Regal bagged 2-32.
Regal Masters then went on to pocket $600,000, trophy, and medals for the players.
In the over-50 category, Parika Defenders became inaugural winners as they beat the Guyana Softball Cricket Association by 25 runs. Batting first, the Defenders raced to a total of 214-4 in their allotted 20 overs. This innings was steered by Rasheed Mohamed who scored 73, which included seven sixes and three fours; and his brother Saddiq, who supported him with a well composed 53 not out, which contained five sixes and a four.
Bowling for the GFSCA, Vickey Ramsaywack, Hakim Majeed and Randolph Perreira each took one wicket.
Chasing down 215 for victory, GFSCA could manage only 189-6, with Sahadeo Budhoo (38), Richard Persaud (27) and Majeed (21) not being able to cultivate any significant partnership to take them over the line.
The winners of this tournament collected $400,000 and a trophy, while all the players received medals.

At the Over-50 presentation, Tony Fernandez of the New York Softball Cricket League was awarded the MVP, and also collected a prize for scoring a century. Imam Gafoor also received a prize for his hundred. The man-of-the-match in the final was Rasheed Mohamed. Fernandes and Usuff received gold pendants with diamond studs, compliments of Steve’s Jewellery, as they were adjudged men of the series.
