Home News Region 1 men remanded on break and enter, assault charges
Twenty-five-year-old Leon Singh and his 24-year-old alleged accomplice, John Peters; both of Mabaruma, Region One (Barima-Waini), were on Friday brought before the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts and were remanded to prison by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan after they both denied joint charges of breaking and entering, along with assault.
The first charge detailed that between May 4 and May 5, 2019, at Kumaka Waterfront, Region One, North West District, they broke and entered the dwelling house of Dwayne Payne and stole US$5000 (GY$1 million), GY$330,000, one CCTV camera among other items totalling $1.5 million.
Meanwhile, another charge stated that on May 8, 2019, at the same location, the duo assaulted George Torrez, causing him grievous bodily harm.
Defence Attorney Mark Conway made an application for bail in which he presented the particulars of his clients.
However, Police Prosecutor Tracy Gittens objected to bail citing the seriousness of the offence and the overall cost of the valuables. Gittens further noted that Singh is a known character to the Police as he is facing similar charges in another court.
As such, the Chief Magistrate remanded the duo to prison. The case was transferred to the Mabaruma Magistrate’s Court and will continue on May 21.
