Schools from across Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice) joined in the celebration spirit of the annual Mashramani observances in Guyana, with the hosting of the Children’s Mashramani Costume Competition.

Intense competition was witnessed at the Mackenzie Sports Club (MSC) Ground and the Lichas Hall in Linden over the course of three days (January 31 to February 2), in keeping with this year’s theme, “Let’s Cooperate and Celebrate Republic 48”.
The action commenced on Wednesday, January 31, with the nursery competition at the MSC Ground, which saw students from schools across the Region competing in the areas of dance, physical display, masquerade, costume display and jump rope competitions. On February 1, the primary and secondary schools’ competitions were hosted at the same venue. On, February 2, the dramatic poetry and calypso competitions were hosted at the Lichas Hall. This saw creative presentations from students, who highlighted issues such as the Guyana-Venezuela border controversy, violence and abuse and Guyana’s oil discovery, among others.
