– Edghill tells new body Govt is ready to assist in its developmental plans
Deron Adams was on Monday elected Regional Chairman of the ninth Council of Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice) while Douglas Gittens will serve as his Deputy following an election at the Watooka Complex in Linden.
Following his election to office, Adams declared that he is happy to serve the people of his region.
“I am truly honoured, proud to be formally and publicly installed as the Chairman of this respected institution, and on this day, I commit to you without reservation; that I will work tirelessly to champion the cause of Region 10, to lead its mission and to strengthen and secure its future. I know it’s a significant commitment but I am prepared to contribute along with the newly-elected and returning councillors to build upon the successes of what we would have achieved over the past 5 years and to fulfil the RDC’s mission which is to support, promote and protect our people’s interest here in Region 10,” Adams.
Adams said with the RDC being the principal planning and policy-making body in the Region, under his stewardship, it will continue to co-ordinate and set the direction for social and economic development.
He assured that the Council will continue to plan carefully at the level of the Committee and will meet the people at the grassroots level to address their concerns. He further called for Government to ensure that the Plan of Action for Regional Development (PARD) initiative is fully implemented as he promised to engage stakeholders shortly.
Speaking on behalf of Government, Public Works Minister Juan Edgehill congratulated the new Council, noting that the administration stands ready to assist.
“I stand to congratulate you and secondly, to commit that our Government, we stand ready and prepared to work with you as a Region for your development and for Guyana’s overall development…The fact that we have these elections of Chairman and Vice Chairman today, it means that we have closed a chapter and we are beginning a new chapter…you can now sit as a Council and representatives, not first of all to your political party but as representatives to the people of Linden and Region 10 to deliver the goods and services to the people of the Region. It is the people that put you there and it is the people you should serve,” Edghill said.
He reminded that Article 13 of the Constitution requires that the people, through their representatives, participate in decision making.
“I want to join my voice in calling on civil society actors and civil society players within Region number 10, despite of your preference or politics, let’s work with one objective for development and transformation,” Edghill noted.
