Remembrance Day observances
Region Two Chairman Devanand Ramdatt has called on all Guyanese to live in peace, love and harmony at this year’s Remembrance Day observance held Sunday on the lawns of Anna Regina Town Council.
During his address to the military, residents and the general public, Ramdatt said that the war is still on and it has not ended, pointing out that many persons are still oppressed from those wars.
He explained that this year’s remembrance observances are being celebrated in the year Guyana celebrated its 50th Independence, noting that even as this happened persons need to reflect on the achievements as well as celebrate the many struggles of our ancestors and prepare to move forward unitedly.
He therefore called on Essequibians to develop civic responsibilities and to preserve what the country has achieved over the years.
“We must demonstrate that sense of patriotism and reflect on the struggle of our ancestors for their sacrifices and triumph,” adding that while struggles occurred in the battlefield there are persons who fought for a better Guyana.
With that he called for every Guyanese to be treated with dignity and respect, and called on leaders to dedicate their energies to eradicate disunity so that peace, love and unity can prevail.
Ramdatt said that he salute the veterans who fought during World Wars I and II.
Before the start of the programme, the chairman took the salute from the disciplinary forces. Present besides him at the parade was Region Two Commander Khali Parashram and Head of Fire Service Clive Mc Donald.
Wreaths were laid at the cenotaph by the Regional Chairman, representatives from the Regional Democratic Coucil and the armed forces. (Indrawattie Natram)
