Region 2 in urgent need of functioning street lights
– RDC disappointed at Public Infrastructure Ministry’s slow response
The Regional Democratic Council in Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam) is calling on the Public Infrastructure Ministry to urgently rectify the lights along the main public road between the Bush Lot and Land of Plenty.
The lights are reportedly out of order and despite several reports made to the Ministry by residents and the RDC, the situation remains the same. The communities are located within the township of Anna Regina and are pitch black at night, making it unsafe for drivers and other road users.
According to Region Two Chairman Devanand Ramdatt, the matter was brought to the Ministry’s attention; however, there has been no response to date. Ramdatt, who is the head of the RDC, said he was disappointed that these streetlights were out of operation since December 2016.
He said that the RDC would engage the Public Infrastructure Ministry in discussions about future plans to install adequate lights along the main public road within the Region.

Residents living in the areas recently protested the delay by Government in addressing the issue. During the protest action, many pointed out that they could not understand why officials from the Ministry were delaying the process of putting the lights back in operation.
“What’s the use of having lights? It’s like white elephants, it’s there but not serving its purpose,” one protestor said.
Residents within Region Two are very concerned about public safety and security; as such, the RDC has reiterated its call for the Ministry to engage the Region’s leadership and residents on developmental plans for the Region.
