Region 2 Journalists threatened by APNU/AFC executive
At least two local Journalists have been threatened by an executive member of the A Partnership for National Unity/Alliance For Change (APNU/AFC) in Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam).
Based on reports received, Romario Blair of Kaieteur News and TV host Ravi Mohan were threatened on social media by the executive, Prince Holder after they published and broadcast content of a recording of threats made to staff by former Regional Executive Officer (REO) Dennis Jaikarran.
The post contained several expletives and derogatory names were also used to describe the two reporters.
When contacted for a comment, Mohan said that he felt threatened by the post and as such, had intentions to report the matter to the Police.
Mohan has since denied mentioning Holder on his TV show, but rather condemned the manner in which the former REO spoke with the media.
Further, Mohan related that after listening to the recording that went viral on social media, he, as a TV host and promoter, publicly condemned the REO’s actions.
On the other hand, when contacted, Blair explained that he was only doing his job and felt that he was being targeted on account of his honesty in reporting the story.
Blair said that he was publicly attacked by Holder at a meeting in 2019 at Anna Regina when the then Leader of the Opposition, Bharrat Jagdeo met with farmers.
He, too, stated that he would lodge a report with the Police and more so, seek an audience with the Police Commander.
Earlier last week, an audio recording of the former REO threatening a staff was publicised. Jaikarran was heard telling the staff that if he could not work with him, the only alternative was to leave the work and commit suicide.
In light of the social media attacks on the Journalists, their colleagues have since condemned the posts and called for freedom of speech to prevail. Guyana Times understands that both of the aggrieved Journalists have since reported the matter to the Police, who have launched an investigation.
