Region 2 Police trained to identify TIP victims

As the Human Services and Social Security Ministry seeks to strengthen collaboration with the Guyana Police Force (GPF) on the issue of human trafficking, a training exercise was conducted on Wednesday with ranks who were brought up to speed on the subject.
The training session, held in the boardroom of the Regional Vice Chairman in Anna Regina, Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam), was conducted by Tanisha Williams-Corbin of the Counter-Trafficking in Persons (C-TIP) Unit of the Human Services and Social Security Ministry.

Speaking at the training session, Williams-Corbin said that the Ministry’s main aim was to train persons in order to better their knowledge of human trafficking in the region. She added that at the end of the training, ranks must be able to identify suspected cases of human trafficking – a heinous crime against humanity.
“After we learned that Region Two is dealing with a high influx of Venezuelan migrants, we decided to commence the training programme in the region where ranks will be able to identify cases of human trafficking,” Williams-Corbin expressed.
Regional Democratic Council (RDC) Councillor and Regional Gender Affairs Committee member, Verina Rasheed said that she was thankful for such an initiative.
“We see most forms of TIP so this training is timely and I am excited that the Joint Service would be better equipped to deal with human trafficking. They would be able to give information to the Police, take some initial action and even give information to the Ministry and other agencies,” Rasheed mentioned.
Meanwhile, Police Commander of Division 2, Denise Griffith commended the efforts of the Human Services and Social Security Ministry and her team for organising such a timely training session that would assist officers in identifying cases of human trafficking on the Essequibo Coast. (G12)
