Region 2 RDC concerned about condition of main roadways

Councillors from both the Government and Opposition on the Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam) Regional Democratic Council (RDC) have raised their concerns over the present conditions of the Essequibo Coast Public Road.
The issue was discussed in depth at the recent statutory RDC meeting for the month of April.
The discussions highlighted the shifting of the Maria’s Delight Bridge, filling of potholes, several sinking bridges, and installation and maintenance of street lights. According to People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) Councillor Vilma Da Silva, commuters as well as drivers traversing the bridge have complained about their safety. She told the RDC that the bridge was falling apart and no one seemed to be responsible. Apart from the bridge, the RDC discussed the sinking of the approaches to several bridges along the public road.
It was also noted that several holes in numerous streets needed filling and the clearing of the road shoulders should be given priority. There were also reports of constant sinking of the road in some areas.
In addition, at a recent meeting held with the Regional Chairman and newly-elected leaders from the Neighbourhood Democratic Councils (NDCs) and the Anna Regina Town Council (ARTC), it was noted that actions should be implemented regarding road safety. According to the Regional Chairman, Devanand Ramdatt, the Police are an important partner in helping to create safer roadways within the region.
Ramdatt noted that the RDC was of the strong view that the Public Infrastructure Ministry has an integral role in addressing the dangers posed by the Maria’s Delight Bridge, other sinking bridges, potholes, and the installation and maintenance of street lights. He suggested that there be a strategic focus and programmes to address such issues within the Region.
In addressing the roaming of stray animals on the roadways, the Anna Regina Town Council will be embarking on a campaign to keep stray animals off the roads. The Council will be working along with Police and other stakeholders in addressing the issue.
Road users, both pedestrians and motorists, are also asked by the RDC to exercise care and consideration when using the roadways.
