Region 2 remembers Guyana’s first female President

Essequibians turned out in their numbers to pay respect to the first female President of Guyana, Janet Jagan, at a wreath laying ceremony organised at the Cheddi Jagan Play Park in Anna Regina, Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam).
Janet was also the first female President in South America and this period marks her 10th death anniversary.

“Bowjie”, as she was popularly known to Essequibians, was an icon and inspiration to many, especially the women who she fought tirelessly for equality and justice.
The Mayor of Anna Regina, Rajendra Prabhulall reflected on the many contributions made by Jagan, as he said her struggle for a democratic Guyana must not be allowed to be trampled upon.
The Region Two PPP supervisor, Vishnu Samaroo gave a detailed talk on the life of this great woman who gave up her comfortable life in her homeland the USA and married former President Cheddi Jagan. She came to Guyana and fought alongside her husband and the PPP for a better Guyana for all.
Tributes were also done by the Progressive Youth Organisation, Women’s Progessive Organisation and the Rice Producers’ Association.
