Region 2 REO moves out of Anna Regina State House

Regional Executive Officer (REO) of Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam) Rupert Hopkinson has finally vacated the Government’s Regional State House at Anna Regina following much controversy over his apparent abuse of power in so doing.

Communities Minister Ronald Bulkan told the National Assembly on Thursday that the REO is now residing in Cotton Field.

Reports indicate that the A Partnership for National Unity/Alliance For Change (APNU/AFC)-aligned official was living a luxurious lifestyle with three maids and security at his convenience, instead of occupying the abode that was designated for him.

A report presented to the Regional Democratic Council in January by Chairman Devanand Ramdatt revealed that REO Hopkinson used in excess of $1 million from the State House account, without proper accountability.

The report revealed Hopkinson spent over $100,000 to purchase decorative plants for the Regional State House. The REO also allegedly spent in excess of $800,000 to purchase an LG television and other items.

In defence, the REO said he refused to live in the house that was provided for him since it was smaller than what his subordinates were utilising. According to an article published in the state media, Hopkinson said he refused to “degrade” himself by dwelling in a house smaller than his subordinates.

“I am the REO and my subordinates such as the Assistant REO should not be living in houses bigger and better than the house designated for me to live in. I studied for seven years and I cannot live in a chicken coop,” he is quoted as saying.
