Region 4 man, 91, latest COVID fatality

− 90 new infections detected, 3572 active cases being monitored

The Health Ministry on Sunday reported that another person who tested positive for the novel coronavirus has died, thus taking the COVID-19 death toll up to 895.
This latest fatality is a 91-year-old male from Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica), who was fully vaccinated but died on Sunday from other complications.
The patient was admitted with COVID-19 like symptoms but died while receiving care at a medical institution, the Ministry of Health said. Samples were taken at the time of admission which subsequently returned a positive test.
However, new statistics provided by the Ministry showed that 90 new COVID-19 cases have been detected within a 24-hour period from 1136 tests conducted.
This now takes the total number of confirmed cases in the country to 35,067. However, only 3572 of these are currently active cases including 19 patients in the COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and the remaining 3553 persons in isolation, that is, 102 in institutional isolation and the other 3451 in home isolation.
There are also three persons in institutional quarantine.
To date, some 30,600 persons have recovered from the life-threatening disease – 11 more recoveries than the figure previously reported.
Moreover, 347,050 persons have been tested for the novel coronavirus thus far and of this, 16,581 males and 18,486 females were found to be positive.
Of the 90 new cases detected on Sunday, eight are from Region One (Barima-Waini); three from Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam); another three from Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara); 24 cases from the Demerara-Mahaica region; six from Region Five (Mahaica-Berbice); a whopping 35 cases from Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne); three more from Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni); five from Region Eight (Potaro-Siparuni), and the remaining three cases from Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice).
There were no new cases recorded in Region Nine (Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo) on Sunday.
The Guyana Government launched its COVID-19 vaccination exercise back in February and continues to roll it out across the various regions in order to achieve herd immunity and reduce the number of COVID-19 infections.
So far, some over 376,400 persons or 73.4 per cent of the adult population have received their first dose of the vaccine and approximately 46.1 per cent or some 236,200 persons who are 18 years and older are fully immunised.
As it relates to children, more than 26,700 or 36.7 per cent first doses have been administered to the 12- to 17-year age group. Of that amount, over 17,100 or 23.6 per cent are fully vaccinated.
Persons are encouraged to get immunised since the COVID-19 vaccine provides a layer of protection against severe symptoms of COVID-19.
Nevertheless, as more people continue to get vaccinated, authorities are urging the public to continue observing all COVID-19 preventative measures, particularly masking in public, social distancing and frequent hand washing and sanitising.
The measures also include vaccination requirements to access any public building such as restaurants, places of worship, schools as well as Government buildings.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), as of Sunday, some 242,348,657 confirmed cases were reported globally along with 4,927,723 deaths.
The WHO also reported on Sunday that in the Region of the Americas, that is, Latin America and the Caribbean, the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases has increased to 92,640,794 while the death toll in the region has gone up to 2,272,988.
