Region 5 man is latest COVID-19 victim

…34 new cases recorded

The Health Ministry has revealed that another person who tested positive for the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) has died. 
This now takes the total number of deaths from the viral illness in Guyana to 175.
According to the Ministry, the latest fatality is a 65-year-old male from Region Five (Mahaica-Berbice) who died on Wednesday while receiving care at a medical facility.
Only on Tuesday, Guyana recorded two more COVID-19 deaths after a 74-year-old man from Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Upper Berbice) and a 58-year-old man from Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica) died. The week began with the COVID-19 death toll at 172.

New cases
Meanwhile, the Health Ministry also reported on Wednesday that 34 new novel coronavirus cases were recorded in the last 24 hours from some 262 tests conducted.
According to the Ministry’s updated COVID-19 dashboard, the total number of confirmed cases in the country is now 7380 – 3791 males and 3589 females.
But only 718 of these are currently active cases. These include six patients in the COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and the remaining 712 persons in isolation – 49 persons in institutional isolation and the other 663 in home isolation.
There are also 11 persons in institutional quarantine.
To date, some 6488 persons have recovered from the life-threatening virus here, with 33 more recoveries recorded Wednesday.
Meanwhile, Guyana has tested some 47,358 persons for the novel coronavirus thus far.
Of the new cases recorded on Wednesday, one was detected in Region One (Barima-Waini), seven in Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara), a whopping 21 cases in Demerara-Mahaica, one in Mahaica-Berbice, three in Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni), and one in Upper Demerara-Berbice.
The figures in the other four regions – Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam), Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne), Region Eight (Potaro-Siparuni) and Region Nine (Upper Essequibo- Upper Takutu) – remained the same.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), as of Wednesday, some 99,864,391 confirmed cases were reported globally with 2,149,700 deaths.
WHO also reported on Wednesday that in the Region of the Americas, that is, Latin America and the Caribbean, the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases has increased to 44,197,482 while the death toll has gone up to 1,015,534.
Since taking office, the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) Government has embarked on a massive testing drive to ensure that all positive cases, especially asymptomatic cases, are detected.
Nevertheless, health authorities are reminding all Guyanese to observe the protocols of the COVID-19 Emergency Measures (NO.13), which are in effect until January 31, 2021.
This order emphasises, among other things, the need for correct and consistent use of a face mask when leaving your home; the importance of maintaining six feet of physical distance from others, and the need for good hand hygiene to help reduce the spread of COVID-19.
