Region 5 stakeholders benefit from food safety training workshop 

A number of Region Five (Mahaica-Berbice) stakeholders were trained on effective food safety practices by the Health Ministry’s Veterinary Public Health Unit, in collaboration with the Guyana Livestock Development Authority (GLDA), Environmental Health Department and the Fisheries, on Tuesday.
The goals of this training were to create attention, provide information and mobilise actions to prevent, detect and manage foodborne risks, as well as to promote best practices for protecting human and animal health.

It also sought to highlight the need for multisectoral collaboration in controlling foodborne and zoonotic diseases, or infections spread between people and animals.
A technical multisectoral team of farmers, processors and retailers of food from animal sources thereby facilitated presentations on Promoting Food Safety along the Food Value Chain, Waste Disposal and Environmental Protection, Antimicrobial Resistance, and Preventative Practices and Traceability and Record Keeping.
Participants also benefited from practical exercises on preparing records pertaining to animal treatment, sanitation and production.
On Monday, the Health Ministry, in collaboration with the Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO) and Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), had also launched a two-day digital workshop to educate healthcare professionals on how to digitally enable healthcare delivery.
This initiative aimed to improve patient experience, patient outcome and hospital management data, and reduce medical errors, by empowering patients to make their own appointments and receive necessary reminders prior to their visit, among other things.
During this engagement, Health Minister Dr Frank Anthony noted that this advanced surveillance system the Ministry was looking to build within the health sector sought to improve the management and detection of patterns and trends in zoonotic diseases.
