Region 6 has capacity to be self-sufficient, feed entire nation – Chairman
“This region has the ability to be self-sufficient and we have the ability to feed the entire country based on our production. But we first have to modernise.”
This view was espoused by the East Berbice-Corentyne Regional Chairman (RC), David Armogan during the launch of the Berbice Expo 2018 at Rose Hall on Wednesday last.
The Region Six Chairman said it is the aim of the regional administration to encourage more Berbicians to become involved in commercial farming. Armogan
pointed out that currently, there are several persons involved in cash crop farming of produce vegetable and citrus fruits.
“We don’t want people to just manage a small plot of land… We want them to get into agriculture in a big way; where they will be able to utilise new methods and technology in order to compete with the overseas markets,” Armogan is quoted by the Department of Public Information as saying.
In order to build the region, the RC emphasised that they must “move away from subsistence farming and incorporate more value-added production across the agriculture sector; not only in the planting of crops but also poultry rearing, cattle ranching and all other aspects of the sector.
