region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice) Chairman Renis Morian has promised relief for Linden flood victims who are presently suffering from the effects of the inclement weather conditions.
During an interview with this newspaper on Wednesday, Morian said works were expected to commence in the community by this weekend. Areas more prone to massive erosion, including Block 22 and Blueberry Hill at Wismar, are expected to be the amongst the first to be targeted.
Morian indicated that, meanwhile, residents were also doing their part in having drains cleared, a move which has been encouraged by the Regional Democratic Council (RDC). While several parts of the community have been adversely affected by tremendous flooding, residents of Rainbow City and Kara Kara, Mackenzie, more specifically have complained bitterly.
The Regional Chairman stated that the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA), along with Regional Officers, has already visited Linden and assessed the situation. Morian added that a warrant was expected to be released on Wednesday so that works can commence.
He said two mini-excavators in addition to a long-broom excavator will carry out the immediate works. This will see approximately nine persons from the community being employed.
The Regional Chairman said Bosai Minerals Group Guyana Incorporated (BMGGI) has also played its part in having the Cockatara creek cleared, while he was pleased that members of the Linden Fire Station have also responded in rendering assistance.
