Residents cite drainage, taxes as major concerns as M&CC hosts ‘open day’
As part of an effort to address concerns expressed by city residents, the Georgetown Mayor and City Council held its first open day on Tuesday.
His worship the Mayor of Georgetown, Ubraj Narine during an interview with Guyana Times relayed some of the issues raised by residents during the event.
“Most of the concerns we are getting especially in Newtown Kitty area and concern drainage and also a few on street lights. The next issue we are getting, it’s about rates and taxes people want to pay but what happened it is that they interest build up so in a large amount,” the Mayor explained.
Back in February, the European Union (EU) had handed over a document to the Mayor in relation to the restoration of City Hall’s deplorable structure and ways in which the space can be utilised to garner independent revenues.
EU Ambassador to Guyana Jernej Videtic made the presentation to which he stated that some £280,000 was expended to craft the document, bringing new ideas to the restoration project. He noted that some plans include using the historic building as a tourism spot where it can be booked for special events to earn money. But this plan seems not to be working.
However, Mayor Narine also spoke of his plans for the restoration of City Hall.
“The Council plan is numerous plan, my plan is to restore City Hall. I want to set up a recycle plant and that would be in a handout very soon in the City for 2020,” he remarked.
Guyana Times caught up with a city resident who also shared his concerns and welcomed the initiative taken by the Council.
“It is concerning the interest rate on my property and I am seeking a waiver because the compound interest that is what mashing up a lot of things. As you know compound interest is on interest on interest. It seems as well I am going to be assisted,” Colin noted.
Another city resident, John Shepard, raised concern on the infrastructure works that are being carried out in his community. He noted that these can be hazardous to the school children due to the fact that the roads are narrow.
