Residents decry deplorable state of Golden Grove roads
Persons residing in the Golden Grove Housing Scheme on the East Bank of Demerara are bemoaning the deplorable condition of the streets in the ‘First Bridge’ section of the community.
According to the villagers, construction work on the various streets in ‘First Bridge’ was ongoing earlier in the year, but the work was left incomplete and no explanation was provided.
“They were working on the streets at the beginning of the year. First Street, Fifth Street and the Sixth Street finish. I don’t know what going on with the others. They ain’t tell we why they stop – nothing,” Imran Persaud said.
The residents complained that owing to the deterioration of the streets, they were often left to walk to their homes from the ‘road head’, because taxi drivers would refuse to traverse the streets.
“If I go to market and stop out at the car park, the cars does just drop me off at the ‘road head’ with all me baggage and I gotta walk in the street. Nobody ain’t wanna come in here. Late night time when my son come from work, he got to walk in still,” Indrawattie Singh told Guyana Times.
Speaking to the taxi drivers outside the Housing Scheme, this publication was informed that they refused to traverse the streets of First Bridge because of the many deep holes which they claim cause severe damage to their e vehicles.
Asif Bacchus, one of the taxi drivers, said: “Is not a problem to drop the people home, but the road bad in deh. Too much holes. The car just sinking in the holes sharp, sharp. It damaging we vehicle.”
The villagers highlighted that they were paying their taxes consistently and they hoped that this matter would be rectified soon, since it was becoming a major inconvenience to them.
