Residents suffering while waiting for breach to be sealed

Residents living in the Lower Pomeroon in Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam) and their farmlands are still under water owing to a breach at Grant Canaan that has not yet been sealed.
Many persons are still counting their losses as their livelihood prospects remain bleak in the wake of the devastation they faced as a result of the flooding which significantly damaged many crops that were ready for harvesting.
According to large-scale cash crop farmer Joan Peters, the water was not receding. She reported that many farmers were clueless what to do next as many of their crops have been destroyed. Persons reportedly lost acres of suckers, sweet cassava, pepper, water melon, bora as well as livestock.
Peters said following the breach owing to the excessive high tides, several regional officials visited the area, but to date nothing has been done. She said many persons want to commence land preparation but cannot do so until the huge breach is sealed. According to the farmer, Government officials visited and assessed the situation, but residents were not given any feedback as to whether works would commence or not.
Currently, persons are forced to dwell in unsanitary conditions given the flood situation and many of the residents have complained of suffering skin rashes and pain in their joints.
They are, therefore, calling on relevant authorities from Central Government to immediately deploy machinery in the area and have the breach sealed so that they can resume operations on their farmlands.
