Resolute Guyana Jags secure another victory against Puerto Rico
A tenacious second-half performance at the St. Kitts and Nevis Football Association (SKNFA) Technical Camp lifted Guyana’s senior men’s national team, the Golden Jaguars, from the jaws of defeat to a crucial 3-1 victory over Puerto Rico on Monday afternoon.
By this victory, they have secured the top spot in Group B.
Head Coach Jamaal Shabazz opted for a starting XI that read: Goalkeeper Quillan Roberts, Reiss Greenidge, Cortez Kellman, Jalen Jones, Jonathan Grant, Stephen Duke-McKenna, Kelsey Benjamin, Captain Daniel Wilson, Elliot Bonds, Omari Glasgow and Liam Gordon.
With the Blue Hurricanes coming into this encounter looking to avenge their Saturday loss, with 3 minutes to go in the first half, Gerald Daz scored with a right-footed shot from the centre of the box. It flew to the high centre of the goal in the 42′ to give his team a halftime lead.
Holding their composure, the Golden Jaguars’ determination earned them an equalizer with a right-footed shot from Nathan Moriah-Welsh in the 48’ rocketing from the centre of the box to the centre of the goal.
The Blue Hurricane were eager to inflict retribution on the Jaguars in the second half, but Quinton Roberts saved a phenomenal shot from Isaac Angking in the 52’ when he cleared the ball over his own back line for a corner, to keep the scores level.
Guyana’s Deon Moore was phenomenal in putting the ball at the back of the Hurricanes’ net, coming off the head from very close range to the centre of the goal in the 76’, with the assist coming from Stephen Duke-McKenna giving the team a major advantage with the score at 2-1.
Omari Glasgow again showed his prowess with a shot from the center of the box to the bottom left corner in the 85’ to seal Guyana’s second win against Puerto Rico.
With their exceptional performance, the Golden Jaguars are just one win away from advancing to League A in the Nations League, marking a significant achievement for the football fraternity.
