Albert Hunte, a father of three and a former member of the Guyana Defence Force, is now the proud owner of a home.
This donation was made possible through the Men on a Mission (MoM) initiative following a simple handing-over ceremony spearheaded by the Minister within the Office of the Prime Minister with responsibility for Public Affairs and Information, Kwame McCoy.
Hunte, 66, who initially lived as a squatter, shared what this new chapter of homeownership means to him. He said, “I was living over on Red Road when I had a conflict. Even though I was squatting, I applied for housing when the process was in its final stages. Eventually, the housing authorities reached out and offered me this piece of land to purchase.”
Having had his share of struggles while squatting in time past, Hunte posited that it genuinely feels great to have a sense of shelter, considering his age.
“It’s just nice to have a roof over your head at this age…I served this country and I have represented this country,” Hunte stated in drawing reference to his time doing military service.
He added, “I would like to thank Men on a Mission and everybody, and the President Dr. Irfaan Ali for my little shelter over my head. I’m very thankful for that.”
During the commissioning of Hunte’s house, McCoy highlighted that Government continues to enhance the lives of citizens through projects such as these.
“We are about creating joy and happiness amongst people and within families; so, Mr Hunte, you are in good hands. You have a gift through the Men on a Mission, a home that you can now enjoy; that brings satisfaction to you and your family. I ask that you care it, take care of it very well, and that you enjoy every portion of it for yourself and family.”
Highlighting infrastructural enhancements taking place in Mocha due to the works of the Government, McCoy declared to the crowd gathered, “Right through this Mocha area and the surrounding areas of Mocha, we can point to tangible developments, tangible progress, things that people enjoy today that they never had accumulated. There is a stock of wealth in these communities, and it is not yet the end of the story, the chapters are continuing on a daily basis.”
Launched in October 2022, the Men on a Mission Initiative aims to combat toxic masculinity while fostering a supportive environment for men. Through mentoring and humanitarian engagement, Men on a Mission initiative promotes integrity, productivity, and accountability within communities. Since its inception, the Men on a Mission initiative has been dedicated to constructing homes for vulnerable persons, including the elderly and single mothers. The beneficiaries have to be landowners in order to qualify for a newly-built house. (G2)
