There is a rift among the hierarchy of Georgetown powerhouse, Demerara Cricket Club (DCC), which was revealed at the recent Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) through a letter under the subject; “Demerara Cricket Club state of affairs.” The GCA’s AGM was held on Tuesday at the Muslim Youth Organization (MYO) Ground, Woolford Avenue.
The letter dated January 17, 2017 carried signatures of 20 concerned members, who sought GCA’s intervention into the state of affairs of the club. They are also calling for urgent election in keeping with the club’s constitution.
According to these members they require the guidance of GCA, be it meetings, sanctions and any other means necessary to regain normalcy at the club.
However, President of DCC, Alfred Mentore, said he was disappointed with the manner the GCA decided to handle this matter. According to Mentore, the GCA upon receipt of the letter should have summoned the members to a meeting to deal with the matter. He added it is a premature letter that was badly handled by the GCA executives, who have their own agenda. If not, Mentore believe they could have acted professionally.
The DCC President was further annoyed that the in the GCA Admiinistrative report failed to make mention of the club’s recent success in the UWI T20 tournament but instead channelled their efforts to the club’s AGM.
He further argued that the AGM which is constitutionally held around February will occur and notice will be sent shortly with the intention of election on or before February 28, 2017. “Was it not for a court matter between the executives of DCC and concern members, the AGM would have already been conducted,” said the president, who also stated that he only learnt that the matter was dismissed at the GCA AGM.
Mentore said the GCA cannot mandate what direction should be taken by DCC since the GCA is a creation of several clubs in the City and has no involvement in the operation in any of these clubs.
At the AGM, prior to election the letter was read by GCA President Roger Harper, who after open deliberation among delegates contesting the election and DCC members, decided is either Mentore confirm a time for his club’s AGM or the club would be suspended from GCA.
Mentore agreed with the former and as a result there will be an AGM this month.
Harper, who is a former President of DCC also pointed to the part of the constitution which states election should be held in December.
Mentore then stated that Harper held that position for a short stint with personal objectives in mind.
