Following his conviction on a charge of armed robbery, 23-year-old Phillip English was on Wednesday sentenced to three years’ imprisonment for the crime. The cust10odial sentence was imposed by Magistrate Dylon Bess presiding at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
English appeared in court earlier this year and had denied the charge, which alleged that on February 10, 2020, at West Ruimveldt, Georgetown, while in the company of others and armed with a gun, he robbed Cleveland Glasgow of two cell phones valued $64,000, and a wallet valued $7000.
According to information, on February 10, Glasgow was riding his motorcycle when English and another man pounced on him. The men, who were also riding a motorcycle, rode up to Glasgow. One of them whipped out a gun and demanded him to stop. English then searched Glasgow and relieved him of the items mentioned in the charge. The matter was reported to the police.
A day later, Glasgow went back to the Police Station to follow up on the matter, and it was then he spotted English, who had been detained in relation to another crime. Glasgow immediately alerted Police ranks. An allegation for robbery under arms was put to English. He opted to remain silent.
The police prosecutor had revealed that English was previously convicted for robbery, and has a series of pending matters before the courts. The robbery convict had been on remand pending the hearing and determination of his trial.
