Robbery suspect killed by Police during shootout

Wanted man William DeAbreau was on Tuesday afternoon shot dead by Police at Bachelor’s Adventure, East Coast Demerara (ECD).
The 25-year-old resident of Bareroot, ECD had been wanted in connection with a series of robberies.
It was reported that at about 15:30h on Tuesday, Police received a tip-off that DeAbreau had been sighted in Bachelor’s Adventure. Responding to the information received, a team of Police ranks went to the location to apprehend the fugitive. However, the situation quickly escalated, as DeAbreau caught sight of the approaching Police personnel and drew a firearm from his waistband with which he unleashed a barrage of gunfire in the direction of the Police.

In a bid to protect themselves, the officials sought cover while returning fire towards the armed suspect. Amidst the exchange of gunfire, DeAbreau was struck, and fell to the ground. The officials secured the area and promptly recovered a .32 Taurus pistol from his hand, along with a magazine containing three live rounds.
Upon closer examination, it was discovered that DeAbreau had sustained gunshot wounds to his right chest and to both feet. He was later transported to the Georgetown Public Hospital for immediate medical attention. However, despite the efforts of medical professionals, DeAbreau succumbed to his injuries, at around 17:50h, while receiving treatment.
The Police, having promptly taken possession of the firearm, magazine and ammunition recovered at the scene, subsequently lodged same at the Vigilance Police Station as part of the ongoing investigation into the incident.
As the investigation progresses, the Police have said, they are committed to thoroughly examining the circumstances surrounding DeAbreau’s actions, and the events that led to the fatal outcome. (G9)
