For the first time-ever, the Golden Arrowhead was hoisted in the Dominican Republic by a Guyanese for an archery competition, as Robert Singh bagged Archery Guyana’s first medals on the international stage at the third annual Caribbean Beginners and Developmental Championships held in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

The championships, hosted over the past weekend (June 28-30, 2019), were contested by participants from eight countries: Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Colombia, British Virgin Islands, St Kitts and Nevis, Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago, and Guyana.
These championships were organised as a stepping stone to prepare for world tournaments and games for Caribbean archers who have not competed in a world ranking event.
Guyana’s sole representative, Robert Singh, secured medals in all of the events. On the first day with 72 arrows Qualification Round, the Guyanese archer secured the second position with 292 points trailing by three points behind a Dominican Republic archer.

Singh later held his own among all the archers displaying excellent form and marksmanship as he threatened the contestants in the qualifying round with 576/720 losing the gold by a mere 11 points behind the eventual gold medallist Jeudy Santos (Dom), and was 92 points ahead of the third-place contender Moises Llopart (Dom).
He then went on to secure a bronze medal in the Beginners Male Individual Category Match. The eventual silver medallist was Franklin Alcantara (Dom). The bronze was contested against Jonathan Ward (SKN).
In the team matches, Singh was then placed with Javlyn Frett from the BVI. Under the excellent guidance and coaching by Guyana-born Wynette Lawrence, an internationally ranked Compound Archer living and coaching in the BVI, the team walked away with a silver medal.
Meanwhile, the Board of Directors of Archery Guyana congratulated Singh on his excellent performance.
