Row over women ends in murder of Venezuelan man

Police are investigating the fatal stabbing of a Venezuelan man which occurred during a row over two females.
Dead is 24-year-old Tony Birza, called “Bush”.
The incident occurred sometime around 00:45h on Sunday at Ruby Backdam, East Bank Essequibo.
Police said the 24-year-old man and his brother were imbibing at a shop in Ruby Backdam on Saturday night, however, at about 21:35h, they both left the shop and proceeded on Ruby Backdam Road on a bicycle, heading home.
On their journey home, the now deceased young man stopped at a shed which is situated on the eastern end of the road to speak to two Spanish women and in the process, the suspect, who is known to them, approached Tony and a heated argument ensued.
This escalated quickly, resulting in the suspect reaching into the waist of his pants, retrieving a long shiny object and dealing the victim one stab to his left abdomen area causing him to receive an injury.
The suspect then made good his escape on foot.
An alarm was raised by the victim’s brother, which resulted in several persons in the area going to their assistance. Checks were made for the suspect but this proved futile.
The Police were later summoned and the body was examined and a single stab wound to the left abdomen area of the victim was observed.
The body was escorted to the Leonora Cottage Hospital where the victim was pronounced dead on arrival.
Investigations are ongoing.
