Ruimveldt teen charged for attempt to smuggle marijuana into prison

Aremorseful teenager of River View, Ruimveldt, Georgetown, is now incarcerated following a failed attempt to smuggle some 264 grams of cannabis into the Camp Street Penitentiary.

The charge stated that 18-year-old Travis Farley on April 14, 2017, at the local correctional facility was in possession of the said narcotics.

Defence lawyer Adrian Thompson argued “no knowledge” on behalf of his client, contending that one could not be in possession of something he did not know about, further explaining that the teen was given a package to deliver to the prison and could not have been reasonably expected to be aware of its contents.

According to Police, the narcotic was discovered in a baby powder bottle among several other articles during a thorough search conducted by the Chief Prison Officer.

The court heard that the prosecution’s file was still incomplete owing to an outstanding analyst report. Bail was denied by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan to the shock of the accused’s mother who uncontrollably broke down in the courtroom. The matter will continue on May 15, 2017 at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
