Runway set for Guyana Fashion Showcase

The inaugural Guyana Fashion Showcase is set for May 24 at the Ramada Georgetown Princess Hotel, featuring some 45 models and 16 designers who will display new fashion trends to the Guyanese public.

Designer Roger Gray

The Guyana Fashion Showcase was founded by Philbert Giddings and promises to bring together local and international artistes from the fashion arena. While the invitation was open to local designers, only five responded including Randy Madray. The international designers are from Jamaica, Togo, the Bahamas and the United States.
One of the designers, Roger Gray, stated that a spectacular show is expected, and the following Monday will feature a travel segment.
“The Monday, we’re doing a travel segment of the event which is a trip to Kaieteur Falls. Before that, it’s the Carnival segment. We have about 16 designers who will be showcasing at the event.”
Another local designer, Michelle Cole-Wagner, emphasised that they are incorporating the eco-tourism aspect of Guyana in the designs. The runway is also one of the largest ones ever executed in Guyana.
“The runway is 60 feet which is probably the longest one ever in Guyana. What we’re trying to showcase is the eco-tourism aspect of Guyana. The runway will be designed to portray such and the girls will be looking more or less like they came out of a jungle.”
Tickets cost $4000 and $8000. There is also the premium package for US$80. The organisers are planning to make this event an inaugural one and are encouraging the general public to support, since proceeds from the raffle will be donated to a convalescence organisation.
It was clarified that this event does not replace the activities of Guyana Fashion Week. Some ready-to-wear garments will also be available from some of the designers.
