Rupununi man admits killing cousin

Phillip Sutherland on Tuesday admitted to killing his cousin at Quamatta Village, Central Rupununi, four years.
He pleaded guilty to the lesser count of manslaughter after pleading not guilty to murder. Sutherland appeared before Justice James Bovell-Drakes at the Demerara High Court, but he will know his fate on March 27, 2018 after his Attorney, Siand Dhurjon requested a probation report before sentencing.
Sutherland and his brother, Franklin Sutherland, were initially charged with murdering their cousin, Martin Roberts, following a drinking spree. It was reported that the brothers and Roberts had travelled to the Quamatta Village Farm. It was also stated that they were returning home on January 9, 2014 when the trio began to imbibe yeast tonic (an Amerindian alcoholic beverage). However, shortly after, according to reports, a fight then ensued, which resulted in Roberts being thrown to the ground and brutally beaten. The now deceased man had been left in an unconscious state. He was subsequently pronounced dead.Sutherland’s Attorney, Dhurjon said on Tuesday that it was Roberts and another man who were fighting before his client got involved. Roberts died from asphyxiation, a broken larynx and blunt trauma to the head. The accused was 22 years of age at the time of the incident. The State was represented by Prosecutor Mandell Moore.
