A Rupununi man accused of unlawfully killing his wife was remanded to prison after he appeared for the first time at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts on Monday, before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan.
Peter Juan, 34, of Shulinab Village, Region Nine (Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo) was charged with the murder of his 47-year-old wife, Justil Bernard, on February 19, 2017.
The accused had reportedly told Police Officers that he and his wife were consuming alcoholic beverages at their home on the afternoon of February 19, 2017 when she left to go to the washroom but slipped and fell, which resulted in her death.
However, a post-mortem examination, which was conducted last week Monday, revealed that Bernard died of a fractured skull and blunt force trauma to her head.
Juan, who is expected to return to court on March 7, 2017, will remain incarcerated at the Camp Street Prison until the next court hearing.
