The Royal Challengers Bangalore had picked up Guyana’s Sherfane Rutherford in the 2022 TATA IPL auction, and while he may not have started out the way he had intended, Rutherford is still grateful for the experience gained in the camp, and is optimistic that in the 2022 edition of the Hero CPL, he would perform better in both batting and bowling, due to his improved fitness.
In an interview with this publication, he was asked what it was like for him in the RCB camp training under some of the greats, and Rutherford said, “Well, first of all, I must thank God for the opportunity. I have been working on some specific things, like my fitness and some cricket skills. So, it is just for me to improve. Leaving here, I want to be better. As you know, I have cricket coming up, so I want to get myself together and get those little extra percentage added to my game to get where I want to.”
The talented left-hander noted that playing and training alongside Faf du Plessis has been great, and he has labelled the South African a cool character. He explained that he admires the love and calmness that du Plessis has for the game.
Rutherford shared that Virat Kohli is a passionate cricketer who loves the game, and he said that for him, (Rutherford), it has been a life-changing experience to train under two of the greatest players in the T20 era, namely: du Plessis and Kohli, and it is something he will cherish forever.
“My highest point of this season is my transformation of my fitness. As you know, I have been working on it for some time now. I am in the right state of mind, and I am feeling good,” Rutherford has posited.
He made mention that when he entered the RCB camp, he approached the trainer and explained to him that his fitness had not been the best. However, with much work and perseverance, Rutherford has attested to feeling a lot fitter, and working hard to better his current state.
Rutherford said he has been bowling in the nets, as he does not want that aspect of his game to deteriorate. Hence, he is optimistic that, come CPL, he can continue his bowling, which is a valuable addition to his game.
In closing his remarks, Rutherford said, “To all my fans and supporters, I just want to say this is not the best games at the start of the IPL, but you know after every dark day there is a brighter day. I am going to keep working to make you guys proud, and give you something to cheer about.”
